Rep. Hakeem Jeffries Formally Welcomes Members to 118th Congress
By Eliza Collins
Officially five days after the new Congress gathered in Washington D.C., Democrat Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York kicked off the 118th Congress as.
Because Democrats had the majority in the last Congress, Mr. Jeffries is the first to speak to hand over the gavel to the newly elected House speaker, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California.
Because the speaker vote was the first thing the members did, lawmakers were not sworn in nor could official business start until that was done.
Members first gathered in Washington Tuesday and Mr. McCarthy was elected speaker early Saturday morning.
As Mr. Jeffries went on with a speech that praised Democrats and their agenda, Republicans started to holler for him to hurry up.
