McCarthy Fails on the 14th Ballot Round
By Eliza Collins
Rep. Kevin McCarthy has failed on the fourteenth vote to secure the House speakership after four Republicans voted against him and two others voted president, despite a direct plea to Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida from Mr. McCarthy himself.
Mr. Gaetz decision to vote present meant that Mr. McCarthy would remain at 216, one short of the 217 he would need to have a majority of the House because Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado also voted present.
The final vote was 216 for Mr. McCarthy, 212 for Mr. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries of New York and two for Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona and two for Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio.
