SD state veterinarian takes closer look at pilot program

The state veterinarian in South Dakota says she’s got a high-level understanding of USDA’s new voluntary H5N1 pilot program.

Beth Thompson says if a dairy producer participates, they will need to prove their herd has been H5N1 free for three weeks. Weekly tests from the milk bulk tank will be required, but she says lactating dairy animals will be able to move without pre-movement testing.

“It’s a trade off of having that herd level assurance the virus isn’t within the herd and then, the dairy would be able to move as it fits with their business structure.”

USDA hasn’t clarified what’s required for producers to enroll in the pilot program, other than producers should contact their state veterinarian if they’re interested.
