Alimentation Couche-Tard, the parent company of the convenience store chain Circle-K, continues its efforts to purchase Seven & i, which owns the Japanese 7-Eleven brand. Alain Bouchard, chairman and founder of Couche-Tard, stated in Tokyo that he intends to fully acquire Seven & i, stressing that Seven & i's local business will remain unchanged and that he is confident that the barriers to antitrust regulation can be solved. He said that Couche-Tard's senior team went to the Japanese market to introduce themselves. Since Japan didn't know much about the company, they were unable to meet any of Seven & i's senior management during this trip. Earlier, Couche-Tard raised the purchase price of Seven & i to 18.19 US dollars per share, bringing the latter's valuation to 7.1 trillion yen, but the acquisition proposal was ignored by Seven & i. Seven & i then announced a restructuring, spin-off of non-core businesses, and renamed 7-Eleven.
