Transferring Your IRA

What is an ACAT transfer and how does it apply to IRA accounts?

An ACAT (Automated Customer Account Transfer) transfer allows you to move IRA assets directly from one brokerage firm to another—such as from another institution to Webull—without needing to withdraw and redeposit the funds like you would in an indirect rollover.

What are the benefits of transferring my IRA using an ACAT instead of a rollover?

Transferring your IRA via ACAT offers several advantages:

  • It’s a simplified and more streamlined process.
  • It avoids withholding taxes that can apply to rollovers.
  • It does not trigger tax consequences or penalties.
  • It’s typically faster, with most transfers completing within 3 to 5 business days.
  • There’s reduced risk of making errors or missing deadlines.
  • It doesn’t generate IRS Form 1099-R or Form 5498.

Where can I find instructions on how to initiate an IRA ACAT transfer?

To get started with your transfer, please visit the “starting your transfer” page on the Webull platform.

What if my IRA's institution is not on the ACAT transfer list?

If your institution is not listed on the ACAT transfer list, you can transfer your IRA through a non-ACAT IRA transfer. This option is available for Traditional, Roth, Rollover, SEP, and SIMPLE IRAs. To begin this process, complete the non-ACAT IRA transfer form and submit it through the in-app Help Center or by email at support@webull.com.
