KRE: Why You Should Still Avoid Regional Banks
Regional banks continue to dramatically underperform the broader market, down more than 35% year-to-date and down more than 40% from the peak in 2018.Regional banks have less diversified revenue streams compared to larger conglomerate banks and thus have struggled to offset declining net interest margins and net interest income.Loan growth is contracting across nearly all major categories which will hinder EPS growth at regional banks.Regional banks are a value trap. Banks trade at a single-digit PE Ratio, but without growth in EPS or revenue, a low PE ratio represents a value trap.If you are looking for cheap stocks, look for individual companies within a sector that have secular tailwinds rather than secular headwinds. Regional banks, similar to Europe and Japan, are set to struggle in the new regime of monetary policy.
