BKLN May Deliver Sub-Par Returns In 2024

The Invesco Senior Loan ETF has returned a handsome 9% since June. The BKLN is a passive investment vehicle giving exposure to leveraged loans. In June, I warned rising defaults could pose a headwind to the BKlN ETF. The fund has returned despite rising defaults as credit spreads have tightened. There is a yawning gap between credit spreads and actual defaults for the BkLN. I believe forward returns may not be as robust as expected for the fund.

Goldman Sachs has announced the beginning of a “New Investment Era” The investment bank believes investors can achieve diversification by looking beyond traditional stocks and bonds. Goldman Sachs says the TINA era may be taking a hiatus as investors look for alternatives to the stock market. The bank says investors can now look at alternative asset classes like infrastructure and real estate.

SRLN: Better Alternatives Exist In The Leveraged Loan Space

SPDR Blackstone Senior Loan ETF is overweight in single-B leveraged loans and has a low concentration in CCC-rated loans. The fund has poor analytics compared to its peers and has historically underperformed the leveraged loan index. Leveraged loans are an attractive asset class until the Fed starts cutting rates. SRLN is a low-cost, high-yielding, fixed income exchange-traded fund that invests in senior loans.
