Scorpio Tankers shares closed at US$88.72 on Wednesday, up 4% on the day, as traders reacted to another substantial quarter from the product tanker specialist. The company posted Q3 2026 results with basic earnings per share of US$4.91 on US$266.5m of revenue, backed by very strong trailing net margins and a net cash position that now runs into the billions. Short term momentum in the stock is clear. The key question is how this cash rich balance sheet and low P/E multiple align with forecasts that point to weaker earnings ahead.

The bullish story hinges on Scorpio Tankers turning structural tightness into sustained cash generation rather than one strong year.
"Bullish analysts expect Scorpio Tankers to keep converting tight effective fleet supply and refinery dislocation into strong cash generation that supports its position in the product tanker market."
Q3 results provide specific milestones for that view. Adjusted EBITDA of US$172m, adjusted net income of US$127m and cash breakevens below US$11k per day support the claim of robust cash generation at present. A net cash position of about US$1.4b plus roughly US$2.5b of total liquidity also indicate that prior periods have already translated into a very strong financial base.

Bearish views argue that Scorpio Tankers is quietly shrinking its earning engine by selling older ships faster than it replaces them.
"Although Scorpio Tankers has reduced net debt to a net cash position and cut its cash breakeven to below US$11,000 per day, continued sales of 11 to 12 year old vessels without one for one replacement could shrink earning capacity if product tanker demand or ton-mile growth slows, which would weigh on revenue and dilute the benefit of lower financing costs."
Q3 shows vessel sales are still subsidising results, with a US$153m gain on five disposals a clear flag. Core adjusted net income of US$127m looks healthy, yet does not prove that earnings power holds once asset sale gains fade. The newbuilding pipeline is sizeable, but ordered tonnage delivers from 2027 onward. As a result, there is currently no hard evidence that capacity loss risk is fully offset.
Scorpio Tankers just showed how a strong quarter and a strong balance sheet can still leave big questions about future earnings power. The real opportunity is finding stocks that could be undervalued before the market corrects them.
