Ameresco Shares Slid Even Though Sales Rose

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

Ameresco’s year has been busy, from closing a US$1.8b biofuels joint venture with HASI to reporting mixed quarterly results where revenue rose but net margin fell. Holding Ameresco from the start of the year would have meant a 35.1% loss, including dividends. If you had made that call on 1 January, you might now be asking how such active project news still translated into that result and whether future earnings quality really justifies allocating fresh capital.

The move put Ameresco in the middle of this trade. Scan 42 power grid technology and infrastructure stocks for other companies exposed to it.

The Two Stories Ameresco Investors Were Weighing

Ameresco shares cost US$29.29 at the start of the period, and anyone buying then had to choose which story about the business felt more convincing.

The bullish narrative pointed to a Fair Value of US$34.22. This price was implied by expectations of 9.1% annual revenue growth and profit margins reaching 3.6% within three years, supported by federal clean energy support and a growing project backlog.

The bearish view was anchored on a Fair Value of US$11. This perspective was built around worries that higher interest costs, policy uncertainty, and supply chain pressures could lift financing needs and compress profitability.

What The Results Changed For The Ameresco Debate

The Neogenyx Fuels joint venture gave Ameresco fresh liquidity, a US$100 million upfront payment, and a clearer biofuels structure that leaned toward the optimistic backlog and earnings quality story. The same period’s hard numbers told a cooler tale. Q2 2026 revenue reached US$515.5 million, yet net income slipped to US$9.7 million and net margin fell to 1.9%. On balance, the evidence cut both ways.

The lesson is simple: when a business case leans on margin expansion, treat revenue headlines as secondary. Track net income and net margin each quarter and see whether they move toward the claimed profitability path.

Ameresco: What The Fall May Already Be Pricing In

Ameresco now trades at US$19.92, with this year’s slide leaving the share price down 35.1% from the start of the year. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits above the current price, based on the idea that a growing backlog and joint ventures could eventually feed into higher quality recurring earnings.

For the fall to look more like an opening rather than a warning, a buyer today would need to believe Ameresco can turn record awards and expanding O&M and energy assets into durable, higher margin cash flows without relying on heavily dilutive funding.

"The main factor that needs to work in Ameresco’s favor is the conversion of its record Q2 2026 awards and growing long-term O&M and energy asset base into durable, higher margin recurring revenue that more than offsets near-term losses, operational disruptions, and leadership turnover."
