SoFi Technologies just gave investors a jolt. The stock closed at US$16.40, up 13.4% on Wednesday, as traders reacted to a punchy Q3 2026 print.
The headline is simple. SoFi booked about US$1.4b of revenue and roughly US$243m in adjusted net income, which puts a brighter spotlight on a valuation that already sat above both peers and a discounted cash flow estimate before this jump. Short term traders are celebrating the pop. Long term holders now have to weigh that earnings strength against a richer price tag.

Management says they can fund 2027 growth without raising capital. Ask Charlie what gives SoFi Technologies confidence in its 2027 plan.
The bullish story hangs on SoFi Technologies turning its everything app into a higher margin, fee heavy platform rather than just a lender.
"The main requirement is that SoFi continues to grow fee-based and technology platform revenue alongside its deposit-funded lending franchise while maintaining strong credit and capital metrics."
The latest quarter moves this from ambition to measurable progress. Fee based revenue reached US$571m and now accounts for 42% of total revenue, up from 39% just one quarter earlier. Capital looks solid with a total capital ratio of 17% and tangible book value at US$9.7b, or US$7.48 per share. Credit costs in personal loans improved, with all in net charge offs at 3.4% and 90 day delinquencies described as low. That mix shift, paired with record loan production, is a concrete milestone for the bullish narrative that SoFi can grow fee streams without stretching its balance sheet.

Critics argue SoFi Technologies is leaning too far into retained lending and self funded projects. The concern is clear.
"While SoFi is emphasizing capital-light segments such as Financial Services, Technology Solutions and the Loan Platform Business, the company is still retaining most new personal loan originations on its own balance sheet."
Q3 backs up that worry. Of US$12.6b of personal loan originations, about US$9b stayed on the books, even as fee revenue reached 42% of total. Capital ratios and credit metrics look healthy, yet the mix has not shifted away from balance sheet heavy lending. The bear case on balance sheet risk is not disproved here.
