Verizon Communications just posted Q3 2026 results that put its long running income story under a brighter light. The telecom giant is known for steady cash generation and a debt heavy balance sheet. This quarter the headline is profit strength. Adjusted earnings per share landed at $1.31 and adjusted EBITDA reached $13.8b, both backed by record free cash flow of $7.8b for a single quarter since 2020.
The stock only climbed 1.9% to $43.93 after the release. That muted move understates how much this report leans on free cash flow firepower as the key trend.

Verizon just signed billions in long-term AI network contracts. Ask Charlie what Verizon’s AI Connect deals could mean for profits.
The bullish pitch hangs on Verizon Communications turning better plans and a leaner cost base into durable service profit.
"The main thing that has to go right is that Verizon Communications sustains its cost and efficiency program while customer-centric offers like Simplicity and Verizon One continue to support lower churn and healthy margins."
Q3 lines up with that ambition. Postpaid phone churn fell, postpaid net adds were the strongest Q3 in five years, and account growth was “revenue positive,” with fewer subsidies. Acquisition promo costs fell 41% and retention spend dropped 30%, while adjusted EBITDA margin reached 40.2%. Record quarterly free cash flow of US$7.8b and raised EPS and FCF guidance indicate that the efficiency drive is feeding through, not just promised.
The bear worry is that Verizon Communications pours cash into 5G, fiber and AI without getting enough high quality usage and pricing to justify it.
"If large scale 5G, C band and fiber investments, along with the Frontier integration and AI related initiatives, do not translate into the expected cross sell, pricing power or enterprise demand, Verizon Communications could face a mix of elevated capital intensity and subdued revenue growth that compresses operating margins and return on invested capital."
Capital intensity remains large, with US$11.9b of capex year to date and full year guidance of US$16.0b to US$16.5b. Service revenue is growing only in the low single digits and total revenue rose 1.5%. AI Connect wins exceed US$4b in contracts, although management points to more meaningful contribution from 2027, so the revenue payback on current spend is still early while competition, including satellite rivals, is building.
