Caterpillar (CAT) has long been synonymous with its signature yellow bulldozers, excavators, and machinery. However, the industrial giant is gaining a foothold in a very different growth market as the artificial intelligence (AI) boom fuels demand for data center infrastructure. With shares performing well so far in 2026, the company’s expanding role in power generation has become an important part of its investment narrative.

The rapid expansion of AI data centers is intensifying pressure on electricity infrastructure. Hyperscalers require enormous amounts of power, yet securing new grid connections can take years in some regions. This has increased the need for on-site power generation and reliable backup systems, creating opportunities for Caterpillar’s Power & Energy segment. Its reciprocating engines and Solar Turbines supply power solutions that support data center operations, linking the company’s performance more closely to the infrastructure demands of AI.

Caterpillar is now preparing to release its fiscal 2026 third-quarter results before the market opens on Thursday, Oct. 29, which could provide further insight into the strength of demand across its key markets. As a bellwether for the industrial economy, the company’s performance will offer investors a clearer view of equipment demand, data center-related growth, and the durability of the current AI infrastructure spending cycle. So, ahead of this event, here’s a closer look at the stock.

About Caterpillar Stock

Caterpillar is a global industrial heavyweight that reported $67.6 billion in sales and revenue in 2025. With a century-long history, the company manufactures construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. Its operations span every continent, supported by a global dealer network. Caterpillar operates through three core segments, Construction Industries, Resource Industries, and Power & Energy, alongside a Financial Products segment that provides financing and related services.

The company is also investing in solutions aimed at supporting the transition to a lower-carbon future. With a massive market capitalization of approximately $318.16 billion, Caterpillar has outpaced the broader market. The stock has gained roughly 34% over the past year and 23% in 2026, compared with the S&P 500 Index’s ($SPX) respective gains of 11.8% and 12.2%, highlighting its strong performance against the broader market.

Caterpillar’s long-standing dividend track record remains a bright spot for income-focused investors. Most recently, the company declared a quarterly dividend of $1.63 per share, payable on Nov. 19, bringing its forward annualized payout to $6.52 per share and its dividend yield to approximately 0.93%. Having paid quarterly dividends since 1933, Caterpillar is set to mark its 33rd consecutive year of annual dividend increases, cementing its standing among the S&P 500's Dividend Aristocrats.

Inside Caterpillar’s Q2 Earnings Report

Caterpillar roared past Wall Street’s expectations in fiscal 2026’s second quarter, delivering record-breaking revenue, a sharp jump in earnings, and a swelling order backlog. The results, released on Aug. 4, sent shares soaring 5.6% that day as the industrial giant capitalized on strong demand across its core businesses. Revenue climbed 24% year-over-year (YoY) to $20.5 billion, comfortably beating analysts’ consensus estimate of $18.9 billion.

More notably, Caterpillar surpassed $20 billion in quarterly sales and revenues for the first time in its history, marking a significant milestone for the company. Behind the record topline was a $3.1 billion boost from higher sales volume, complemented by $595 million in favorable price realization. The earnings picture was just as impressive. Adjusted earnings surged 73% YoY to $8.17 per share, far exceeding analysts’ estimates of approximately $6.20.

Caterpillar also strengthened its profitability, with its operating profit margin expanding to 20.9% from 17.3% in the year-ago quarter. Its adjusted operating profit margin climbed to 21.9%, compared with 17.6% a year earlier. Growth was broad-based, with all three primary segments contributing to the strong performance. Construction Industries stood out, with revenue jumping 35% YoY on robust retail sales. North America, Caterpillar’s largest market, was particularly strong, recording a 50% increase.

Power & Energy also gained traction, posting 17% revenue growth as sales increased in large reciprocating engines, turbines, and turbine-related services, primarily for data center applications. Together, Construction Industries and Power & Energy generated 81% of Caterpillar’s total revenue, highlighting the importance of equipment demand and power infrastructure to its business. Resource Industries added to the momentum, with revenue rising 20% YoY.

Beyond revenue and earnings, Caterpillar’s cash generation remained strong. Enterprise operating cash flow reached $4.4 billion in the second quarter, and the company ended the period with $6.7 billion in enterprise cash. Caterpillar also continued returning capital to shareholders, spending $1.5 billion on common stock repurchases and $0.7 billion on dividends during the quarter. Perhaps the clearest indication of future demand came from Caterpillar’s order book.

Its backlog ballooned to $72 billion, a 92% increase from the year-ago period, providing a substantial pipeline of orders to support future activity. Management is now raising the bar for 2026. Citing healthy demand across all three primary segments, Caterpillar increased its full-year sales and revenue growth outlook to the mid-to-high teens. With record quarterly revenue, expanding margins, and a significantly larger backlog, the upcoming earnings report will offer investors another opportunity to assess whether this momentum can continue.
