07:01 AM EDT, 10/26/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Business sentiment in Germany surprised on the upside in October, with local companies having a "more optimistic" view that the economy will see an improvement over the coming months, according to the ifo Institute. The ifo business climate index rose to 90.2 points in October from 89.9 points in September, data from the economic research institute showed Monday. The latest reading came in ahead of the consensus estimate of 90 points. The expectations indicator, which measures companies' projections for the next six months, increased to 91.6 points from 90.4 points in the previous month, against the market forecast of 90 points. In contrast, the current situation index stood at 88.8 points, lower than the prior 89.5 points and the consensus of 89.9 points. "The sixth consecutive monthly increase in the Ifo index strengthens the narrative of German economic resilience. Or perhaps it simply reflects an unwavering belief in the economic effects of the large fiscal stimulus," ING said in a note, highlighting that the index reached its highest level in more than three years. "However, we're also seeing the first cracks in the picture of a recovering German economy: the current assessment component dropped slightly, indicating that surging energy prices and interest rates are starting to leave their mark. Still, the expectations component, perhaps inspired by last week's investment fair in Berlin, made another significant jump, reaching its highest level since early 2025." Ifo said the manufacturing industry saw a significant improvement in business sentiment, with the indicator rising to 1.2 points from -2.7 points, marking the first time the current situation and expectations indicators for the sector returned to positive territory in over three years. Sentiment in the construction sector also improved to -15.5 points from -17 points. The business climate index in the services industry, on the other hand, fell to -1.2 points from 0.7 points, while sentiment among companies in the trade sector remained stable at -17.2 points. Companies in both sectors expressed more positive expectations over the coming months. "The biggest unknown for the German outlook, particularly the longer-term outlook, remains whether the government is still willing and able to implement the already announced structural reforms," ING added.
