Mohamed A. El-Erian wrote that markets have been gripped by a reassessment of return on investment in technology and its massive funding needs, pressuring the NASDAQ and widening credit spreads, even as confidence remains that the sector will drive growth.
He said innovation has not been matched by deeper economy-wide adoption and stronger risk mitigation, warning that without both, the transmission from innovation to productivity, growth and earnings would likely disappoint. He also pointed to bond-market volatility and sovereign-spread stress, highlighting France trading at an "eye-popping spread of about 170 basis points relative to Germany."
El-Erian said markets widely expect the Federal Reserve to hold rates steady on Wednesday, but to hike in December and next year. He argued, "Rate increases are the wrong policy tool for the US economy at this juncture," adding, "A much better policy approach is fiscal containment." He also cited consensus forecasts for PCE inflation of a monthly headline reading of 0.5% and core at 0.3%.
