Autoliv came into Q3 2026 earnings looking like a value story, trading on a trailing P/E of about 13.1x and sitting roughly 47.3% below one published fair value estimate. The stock still dropped 3.5% on the day to US$114.71.
The headline result did not read like a collapse. Basic earnings per share for the quarter landed at US$2.13 on revenue of US$2.693b, with net income of US$155m. The real tension for investors is focused on margins, which have softened over the past year and now sit at the center of the Autoliv debate.
Value-driven investors may like Autoliv’s 13.1x P/E and discounted fair value estimate, but softening margins raise the risk that it ends up a value trap rather than a clean bargain. Autoliv held margins despite flat sales and cost headwinds. Ask Charlie what makes Autoliv so confident about Q4 margins.
Optimists argue that Autoliv can lean on higher safety content in Asia and new product categories to support stronger earnings quality over time.
"Heightened global focus on vehicle safety and increasingly strict automotive safety regulations align with Autoliv’s rising content per vehicle in India, where sales have almost tripled to about 6% of group revenue and content per vehicle has grown roughly 20% annually for two years, pointing to further potential uplift in revenue and operating margin as safety content scales in these markets."
Q3 results show India organic sales up about 30% and China outperformance versus local production, which backs the content story. Yet group revenue is roughly flat and margins have compressed, so regional strength is not yet translating into broader profit expansion.
On the flip side, sceptics focus on whether restructuring and automation can really offset raw material and tariff pressure without eroding profitability.
"The main factor that has to go right is that Autoliv sustains margin gains from structural cost reductions, automation, and footprint optimization, while managing tariff recovery and raw material headwinds through supplier negotiations, customer compensation, and internal savings."
Adjusted operating margin of 9.7% is slightly below last year and full year guidance has been tightened to the low end. Management reports about 170 to 180 bps of incremental cost headwinds and material inflation of roughly US$42m in Q3, only partly offset by customer recoveries and savings, which keeps the bear concern very much alive.
