06:45 AM EDT, 10/21/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Commission launched formal proceedings to conduct an in-depth investigation into Booking.com for possible violations of the European Union's Digital Services Act, according to a Wednesday notice. Specifically, the investigation will focus on whether the provider of the digital travel platform "properly identified and assessed" systemic risks for the dissemination of illegal content and whether it took "effective measures" to mitigate them. It will also assess whether the company "diligently assessed and addressed" risks of phishing scams, as well as whether Booking.com complies with the DSA's advertising transparency obligations. As part of its evidence-gathering process, the commission may send additional requests for information to Booking.com. It, however, warned that the proceedings do not imply any outcome of the process.
