Northrop Grumman just dropped its Q3 2026 scorecard and the stock immediately jumped 4.6% to about US$534. The mood on the screen says relief rally. The numbers point to something more grounded in cash.
Earnings per share of roughly US$7.91 and revenue of about US$11.1b were solid, but the real story sits in profitability. Trailing net margin near 10.4% and a P/E around 16.8x against much higher industry averages frame today’s move as investors reassessing a defense contractor that has been quietly tightening its earnings engine.

Ask Charlie what Northrop Grumman said about the B-21 ramp.
The bullish script says execution on big programs and capacity builds turns today’s backlog into stronger profit power.
"The main requirement for this narrative is continued execution on high visibility programs and capacity buildouts, including B-21, Sentinel, munitions and solid rocket motors, and national security space, while keeping segment margins on track despite pockets of contract pressure and elevated capital expenditure."
Q3 lands on the supportive side of that claim. Segment operating income rose faster than sales, segment margin reached 12.1%, and adjusted free cash flow of US$1.8b comfortably covered higher capex. Raised 2026 EPS and segment income guidance, with segment margin implied near 11.3%, points to these ramps translating into tangible profitability rather than just booked backlog.
The bear story focuses on cost blow ups on complex work that could eat into those same margins.
"Execution issues on complex fixed price contracts, as seen in the unfavorable estimate at completion adjustments on the Stand in Attack Weapon program and the GEM 63XL program, show that cost or schedule overruns can quickly compress segment margins and may weigh on company wide net margins and earnings if similar issues occur on other projects."
Recent numbers show that concern, but not this quarter’s outcome. Segment margin held above 12%, net margin over the last 12 months improved to 10.4%, and EPS increased. Guidance for 2027 still assumes modest margin expansion and higher free cash flow even with capex around 4.5% of sales, which suggests prior problem contracts remain contained for now.
