Microsoft (MSFT) will release its fiscal 2027 first-quarter earnings on Oct. 28. The event matters to Microsoft stock fans because the results could clarify whether its massive artificial intelligence (AI) investments are paying off.

Microsoft has been spending heavily on AI infrastructure and technology, raising investor concerns about rising costs and pressure on short-term profits. However, the company’s recent performance suggests these investments are accelerating cloud growth and strengthening its long-term prospects. This momentum is expected to continue into fiscal Q1 2027.

MSFT stock is up about 10% year-to-date (YTD) but only 3% in the past 52 weeks.

Microsoft's Q1 Outlook

Microsoft is positioned to deliver strong Q1 growth, supported by robust demand for Azure cloud infrastructure, expanding enterprise adoption of its AI offerings, and increasing monetization across its software ecosystem.

MSFT’s fiscal 2026 performance highlighted the growing contribution of AI-related investments to its overall growth. In fiscal 2026, Microsoft generated more than $331 billion in annual revenue, up 18% from the previous year. Microsoft Cloud revenue rose 27% to over $214 billion, while Azure became a key growth driver, exceeding $100 billion in annual revenue and posting 41% year-over-year (YoY) growth. Its bottom line jumped 22% YoY despite significant investments in AI capabilities.

Beyond cloud infrastructure, Microsoft is expanding AI revenue through Copilot and higher-tier productivity solutions. Paid Copilot subscriptions more than doubled sequentially, pushing total paid seats above 30 million. Increased demand for Copilot, Microsoft 365 E5, and early interest in E7 also supported growth in average revenue per user (ARPU). These developments reflect Microsoft’s ability to generate AI revenue through both cloud computing services and enterprise software.

The tech giant’s position across multiple layers of the AI ecosystem gives it a key competitive advantage. Azure benefits from increased investment in the computing infrastructure needed to develop and run AI applications, while Copilot and premium Microsoft 365 subscriptions let the company capture value from AI-powered productivity tools.

Looking ahead to Q1, Microsoft forecasts Intelligent Cloud revenue of $40.95 billion to $41.25 billion, implying YoY growth of around 33% to 34%. Azure revenue growth is projected to reach about 45% on a constant-currency basis, up from 43% in the preceding quarter, indicating further acceleration.

Management also expects growth to accelerate further during the first half of fiscal 2027, reflecting rising demand for AI computing resources and cloud-based solutions.

Copilot is expected to remain another important contributor to Microsoft’s AI strategy. Its integration into the company’s software ecosystem creates additional opportunities to generate recurring revenue as enterprises adopt AI-powered tools to improve productivity and streamline business processes.

Higher revenue will translate into solid earnings growth. Analysts expect Microsoft to report earnings of $4.71 per share, up 14% from the same period last year. MSFT has exceeded analysts’ earnings estimates in each of the previous four consecutive quarters, including a 12.6% positive surprise in the most recent quarter.

The Bottom Line for MSFT Stock

Microsoft’s Oct. 28 earnings report will indicate whether its substantial AI investments are translating into solid revenue and earnings growth. Strong Azure demand, accelerating cloud revenue, and broader Copilot adoption could strengthen MSFT’s position as a leading beneficiary of enterprise AI spending.

Microsoft’s valuation also appears reasonable. MSFT stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 27.5, suggesting further upside if cloud revenue growth accelerates. Notably, Microsoft shares surged 15.5% after its last quarterly earnings report, as faster growth from AI investments boosted investor confidence.

Wall Street analysts are also optimistic ahead of the upcoming earnings release. Microsoft's stock currently has a “Strong Buy” consensus rating, reflecting positive analyst sentiment.
