Key Points

  • Coca-Cola has raised its dividend for 64 years consecutively.

  • Coca-Cola stock is up 40% this year,

  • The dividend yields 2.2%, well below the historcial average.

Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) is the classic Dividend King. It has raised its dividend for the past 64 years, and there are few stocks with a better track record.

Historically, the stock hasn't been a market outperformer, but it shines when the economy is in tough circumstances. Today, it's beating the market despite the market's strong bull run this year, 40% to 13%. Since the dividend yield moves conversely with the stock price, Coca-Cola's current yield of 2.2% is well below its typical average of about 3%.

If you invest $10,000 today, here's how much you'll get in dividends.

The classic dividend stock

Since Coca-Cola stock is soaring, $10,000 won't by you as many shares as it did last year, hence the lower yield. At the current price of $93.90 per share, $10,000 will buy 106 shares. Coca-Cola pays a quarterly dividend of $0.53 per share, or $2.12 per share annually. If you own 106 shares, therefore, you will get $224.72 annually.

That might sound disappointing, but it highlights the need to invest when you're younger and have a larger foundation, to be prepared for retirement or for whenever you'll need passive income.

At the current price, Coca-Cola's yield isn't as high as it once was, but the company is reliable for paying and raising it. The $224.72 for this year will likely become more next year and every year after, and Coca-Cola could be an excellent element of a well-balanced portfolio.
