Due to the negative impact of the new US cross-border remittance tax and the Iranian conflict, the size of remittances, the largest source of foreign exchange in Kenya, may decline for the first time since 2009 this year. According to data from the Bank of Kenya, remittances from overseas Kenyans set a record of 5.04 billion US dollars in 2025. Remittances declined slightly by 0.2% in the first nine months of this year to US$3.77 billion. If capital inflows in the fourth quarter remain at the current average monthly level, the total amount of remittances for 2026 will be slightly lower than last year.
