STOCKHOLM NEWS: A recent joint study between Stockholm University and Caroline Medical School in Sweden found that older people who have a higher degree of greenery within 100 meters of their home have a lower risk of developing dementia over time. According to a press release recently issued by Stockholm University, the study followed up nearly 3,000 people aged 60 and above in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, for 16 years. Using satellite images and geographic information systems, the researchers measured the degree of greenery within 100 meters, 250 meters, and 500 meters around the study subjects' homes, and regularly assessed their cognitive health status and the occurrence of dementia. During 16 years of follow-up, 477 people were clinically diagnosed with dementia. Research shows that a higher degree of greenery within 100 meters of a home is associated with a lower risk of dementia in the elderly, and this association is more obvious among women. As the scope of assessment of the greening situation has expanded, this correlation has weakened.
