The Zhitong Finance App learned that on October 15, the 31st Chinese Medical Association Organ Transplantation Annual Conference opened in Zhengzhou. During the conference, relevant experts made a special report on research related to in vitro support and transplantation of heterologous liver. Among them, two studies relied on organ perfusion systems independently developed by True Health Medicine (02697), focusing on extracorporeal liver cross-circulation and in-situ whole-liver heterologous transplantation in non-human primates. True Health Medical's organ perfusion systems all provided equipment platforms for related studies.

According to expert reports, during the experiment, animal vital signs were stable, liver bile continued to be secreted, and core biochemical indicators were generally stable, which could effectively compensate for liver physiological function; the body's immune rejection was controllable, and no hyperacute or acute rejection damage occurred, effectively overcoming the core technical problems of heterologous liver transplantation. The results strongly confirm the viability and safety of gene-edited porcine liver cross-circulation techniques for bridging liver failure. They mark a new stage in clinical translational research on heterologous organ transplantation in China, and provide a new technical path for the treatment of patients with acute/slow acute liver failure.

Earlier, True Health Medical announced that the company, in collaboration with the research team of Yunnan Agricultural University, Kunming First People's Hospital, and the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University, has completed six cases of gene-edited pig liver-assisted nonhuman primate acute liver failure models with extra-vitro implantation to support treatment preclinical trials, setting a record of up to 144 hours and 6 cases of stable liver function perfusion support treatment. This is the first time in the world that long-term efficacy of this technology has been verified.

According to information, the organ perfusion system of True Health Medical uses a general core host, with consumables and configuration modules such as replaceable special pipelines, organ tanks, perfusion fluid, etc., so it is possible to carry out research applications related to room temperature perfusion and preservation of multiple organs such as liver, kidney, heart, and lungs, and in vitro life support without changing the host. According to the announcement, the relevant technology is expected to be explored and applied to various diseases and clinical scenarios related to severe liver dysfunction in the future, such as acute liver failure, subacute liver failure, severe liver failure and related severe liver disease, severe patients awaiting liver transplantation, and severe liver dysfunction after liver transplantation. The relevant applications are currently in the direction of exploratory research and are not approved clinical indications.

Acute liver failure is progressing rapidly and the fatality rate is high. Existing artificial liver support technology is still difficult to completely replace the complex physiological functions of the liver. Liver transplantation is limited by factors such as liver resources, patient condition, and timing of transplantation, and there is no effective emergency bridging treatment in clinical practice. What the above study explores is the use of extracorporeal perfusion systems to connect biologically active isolated livers to achieve potential liver function support, and seek a window period for patients with severe liver failure to recover liver function or receive liver transplants.
