Did Daqo New Energy's 64% Drop Catch You Out? What Investors Missed

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

Daqo New Energy spent the year talking about N-type technology, cost control and a big pivot into AI data center energy gear, yet the share chart tells a very different story. Investors who held Daqo New Energy from the start of the year are down 64.1%, including dividends. If you had been weighing a position back on 1 January, which signals in the polysilicon slump and fresh losses might have hinted this outcome was even possible?

The useful thing about a Narrative is that the reasoning is checkable: the assumptions sit beside the argument, and together they imply an estimated Fair Value you can disagree with.

The Two Stories Investors Had To Weigh On Daqo New Energy

The shares cost US$29.5 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Daqo New Energy had to choose between two very different stories about what that price already implied.

The bullish Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of US$37, built on an assumption that revenue could grow 76.9% a year and that profit margins might swing from heavy losses to 13.6% within three years.

The more cautious Narrative put Fair Value at US$26.58, assuming 57.5% annual revenue growth but warning that prolonged industry overcapacity could keep polysilicon prices under pressure and strain margins.

What The Results Changed For The Daqo New Energy Story

Daqo New Energy committed about RMB 6b to build an AI data center energy solutions base, which supported the bulls’ diversification hopes beyond polysilicon. The hard numbers told a different story. Revenue fell from US$75.189m in Q2 2025 to US$62.657m in Q2 2026, while the firm reported a larger net loss and a weaker net margin, which aligned with the cautious case.

The hinge assumption here was a rapid swing from heavy losses to healthy profitability. When you assess another business built on a similar promise, track the net margin trend against any expansion plan, and check whether new projects arrive before a clear turn in earnings quality or only after such a turn is well established.

What You Are Paying For In Daqo New Energy After A 64% Slide

Today Daqo New Energy trades at US$10.65 from the start of the year, and the selected Narrative places its Fair Value above that level based on its own assumptions rather than hard fact.

The Narrative leans on policy support, cost discipline and N-type polysilicon to argue the business could yet rebuild earnings. A buyer here would need to believe regulatory help and technology focus turn current losses and industry oversupply into a durable recovery in pricing and profitability.

"Recent regulatory interventions by Chinese authorities to curb irrational competition and enforce sales above production costs are expected to stabilize polysilicon prices and improve industry profitability, directly supporting future revenue and margins for Daqo. Global momentum in solar installations, driven by policy incentives and increasing cost-competitiveness of solar power, remains robust, positioning Daqo to benefit from sustained long-term demand growth, which supports a recovery in sales volumes and top-line growth once market conditions normalize."
