Why Cencosud Bears Were Right Before The Drop

Simply Wall St · 1d ago

The latest jolt for Cencosud holders arrived with Q2 2026 results, where revenue slipped year on year and net income swung from profit to loss as margins moved from positive to negative. Investors who held Cencosud from the start of the year are down 36.1%, including dividends. If you had put money to work on 1 January, that outcome would feel brutal. So what did that earnings stumble really change, and what are you now implicitly betting on if you stay invested?

Cencosud has already moved. See which of 196 high quality undervalued stocks still trade below our estimates.

The Two Stories Cencosud Investors Had To Weigh

The shares cost CLP2,895 at the start of the period, and anyone looking at Cencosud then had to pick between two very different but reasonable stories about where the retailer might head next.

On the optimistic side, the Latin American urbanization and digital thesis pointed to a Fair Value of CLP3,800, essentially a price implied by upbeat assumptions such as revenue growth of 8.2% a year supported by stronger margins from automation and AI driven cost control.

The more cautious view, focused on digital pressure and macro risk, suggested a Fair Value of CLP2,027, built on slower 2.5% revenue growth and concern that rising online competition and heavy investment needs could keep the future P/E nearer 9.3x.

What The Results Changed For The Cencosud Thesis

The clearest new fact was the Q2 2026 earnings line. Cencosud moved from net income of CLP86,491 million in Q2 2025 to a loss of CLP36,455 million, while net margin shifted from 2.1% to a negative 0.9%. That move into loss-making territory challenged the optimistic case that nearer term profitability would already be firming up.

The useful takeaway for other stocks is simple. When a bullish story leans heavily on margin expansion, track the reported net margin each quarter and test whether it is actually moving in the intended direction.

What Cencosud’s Lower Price Now Asks You To Believe

Cencosud trades at CLP1,850 today, well below where it started the year. The selected Narrative sees Fair Value above that level, tied less to digital optimism and more to what its properties and improving overseas formats can earn over time.

The central question for you is whether Cencosud can turn its recent real estate expansion and Colombia rebound into sustainably higher EBITDA and cash generation.

"The current valuation implies the market is treating Cencosud’s digital ecosystem, productivity program and high margin shopping center expansion as lower quality or at risk, which is consistent with a stock price that appears low relative to a business with these assets and self help levers."

Another Way Retailers Are Adapting

Cencosud raises questions about physical formats and digital channels working together. You could also look one step sideways.

Large food retailers elsewhere are pushing into omnichannel shopping and owned brands. They are using data tools to personalise offers and keep baskets sticky.

One grocer has poured money into automation, supply chains and online platforms. That effort aims to keep margins steadier while shoppers chase value and convenience.

The same retailer is reshaping its store network and building a marketplace business. That mix of efficiency, health trends and digital sales could quietly redefine earnings power.
