The Zhitong Finance App learned that according to reports, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued civil subpoenas to AI giants Anthropic and OpenAI requesting documents related to the security incident.

The investigation comes at a time when concerns about AI safety are heating up. According to reports, related models have hacked into websites and displayed deceptive or aggressive behavior during tests. This highlights the risks posed by increasingly autonomous systems and whether safeguards against harm are in place.

Last month, it was reported that the FTC plans to launch an industry-wide investigation into AI companies. The FTC also plans to force executives from top AI developers such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and research institute METR to testify.

The FTC, OpenAI, and Anthropic did not comment.

The subpoena required more than 50 pages relating to security incidents and privacy policies

The report said that the FTC requested more than 50 pages per subpoena, seeking information such as security incidents, safeguards, marketing materials, and privacy policies.

The FTC has broad powers to sue companies for unfair or deceptive practices. In the past, the agency has used this power to take action against companies that fail to take reasonable steps to protect consumer data.

FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson suggested in an interview last month that developers instruct AI agents in cybersecurity tests to be responsible for any damage caused if it causes a hacker attack.
