Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) CEO Elon Musk touted the EV giant’s focus on safety and build quality of its vehicles after a Tesla owner shared his anecdote about being involved in a crash on a freeway with his son.

Tesla Owner Recounts Accident, Maye Musk Hails Son Elon

On Monday, user Jeff Fantin took to the social media platform X, saying that he and his son, while making their way back from the X Takeover event hosted by Tesla Owners Silicon Valley, met with an accident on the freeway. “My son and I are sitting in the ER alive tonight thanks to my Tesla and God’s grace,” Fantin said.

He credited the vehicle’s safety features with saving their lives. “This is a true testimonial to how safe these freaken Teslas are,” Fantin said.

Quoting Fantin’s post, Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, hailed her son. “Remembering when Tesla was just starting, Elon would say Safety First,” she said. Musk added that the CEO’s safety-first approach was the reason that Fantin and his son were alive and that “many other lives will be saved.”

Musk quoted his mother’s post on X, outlining his approach to safety. “Your safety has always been priority 1,” at Tesla as well as at Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ:SPCX), Musk said in his post.

NHTSA Probes School Zone Speeding

Talks of Tesla’s safety come as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) launched a probe into the company’s Robotaxi network after reports emerged that the vehicles, the Model Y Robotaxi and the Cybercab, were speeding in school zones.

Tesla was also asked by the agency to answer safety-related questions on how the company self-certified its Cybercab to be compliant with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), intially giving Tesla till the end of last month to furnish a response under oath.

However, a subsequent NHTSA order published on September 29 gave Tesla an extension to furnish its response. Tesla now has until October 30 to respond to NHTSA.

Notably, Tesla recently shared that it had expanded its Robotaxi network in Austin and now operated more than 300 Cybercabs in the city in 30 days. Tesla said that the expansion demonstrated an 8x growth in its Austin fleet of Cybercabs.

Price Action: TSLA shares were down 1.07% to $373.99 during pre-market trading on Tuesday.
