Energy Focus, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFOI) insiders who purchased shares in the last 12 months were richly rewarded last week. The stock climbed by 11% resulting in a US$1.9m addition to the company’s market value. In other words, the original US$600.0k purchase is now worth US$786.0k.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
The CEO, President Chiao-Chieh Huang made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$600k worth of shares at a price of US$2.29 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of US$3.00. While it does suggest insiders consider the stock undervalued at lower prices, this transaction doesn't tell us much about what they think of current prices.

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Energy Focus insiders own about US$9.7m worth of shares (which is 48% of the company). I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
There haven't been any insider transactions in the last three months -- that doesn't mean much. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. Judging from their transactions, and high insider ownership, Energy Focus insiders feel good about the company's future.
