The Thai stock market faced volatility driven by external factors, including geopolitical risks, energy prices and inflationary pressures. The U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) raised interest rates and signaled that rates would remain elevated for an extended period, keeping U.S. Treasury yields high and fueling volatility in capital flows to emerging markets, with foreign investors net sellers across several regional markets. Domestic flooding in late September also weighed on the market. The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Executive Vice President and Head of Research Department, Chatchai Thisadoldilok, CFA, FRM, said that the SET Index hovered near the 1,600-point mark for most of the month before facing heavier selling pressure toward month-end, coinciding with growing concerns over the flooding situation. However, the overall impact on listed companies remained limited, while domestic fundamentals continued to provide support. Fitch Ratings raised its outlook on Thailand to Stable and affirmed its BBB+ rating. Investment also continued to expand, particularly in technology and related industries, in line with sustained growth in technology exports. Government measures have become clearer, covering post-flood relief and recovery, economic stimulus and investment. Key factors to watch in the period ahead include the direction of interest rates and bond yields, as well as economic conditions and corporate earnings for the remainder of the year.
