Market Chatter: EU Reportedly Mulls Measures to Curb Surging Shipments of Chinese Hybrid Vehicles

05:32 AM EDT, 10/07/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The European Union may impose time-limited tariff-rate quotas as part of safeguard measures being prepared to curb the rise of Chinese hybrid vehicle imports into the bloc, Bloomberg News reported Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. A potential enforcement is subject to discussions between the EU's trade chief, Maros Sefcovic, and Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao in Beijing later this week. The potential cap on hybrids is expected to be low to keep China from making a similar move, the sources said. If the import cap yields a desirable outcome, the European Commission may implement it in other sectors with trade imbalances. The commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MT Newswires. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
