Cattle Rally on Tuesday

Live cattle futures were anywhere from $3.97 to $5.30 higher across the board on Tuesday. Cash trade has yet to get kicked off this week, following last week’s live northern sales at $220-222 and southern trade reported at $226. Feeder cattle futures were up $6.60 to $9.575 on the Tuesday session, nearing $10.75 limit gains in some contracts.  The CME Feeder Cattle Index was 54 cents lower on October 5 to $337.22. 

Monday’s Crop Progress report showed the US pasture rating at 23% gd/ex, up 4% on the week. The Brugler500 index was back up 9 points to 257.

Monthly export data from Census showed 197.77 million lbs of beef exported in August, up 3.6% from a yar ago but down 0.6% from July.

Wholesale Boxed Beef prices were mixed in the Tuesday afternoon report, with the Chc/Sel at $22.59. Choice boxes were up 67 cents at $379.93, with Select $2.23 lower to $356.34. USDA estimated Federally inspected cattle slaughter for Tuesday at 110,000 head, taking the weekly total at 212,000 head. That was up 9,000 from the week prior and 6,510 head below the same week last year.
