If Megaport was on your watchlist instead of in your portfolio, the outcome over 2026 may feel like a missed shot. Holding Megaport from the start of the year would have returned 76.6%, including dividends. That move sits against a backdrop of analysts already split between bullish expectations for cloud and AI driven interconnection growth and bearish worries about hyperscalers internalising connectivity. If you were judging this on 1 January, which assumption about who would own future AI and cloud traffic looked more convincing?
Narratives are how investors here put a case on the record, with explicit assumptions about revenue, margins and the multiple. Those assumptions imply an estimated Fair Value.
This theme extends beyond Megaport. See which of 91 AI infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.
The shares cost A$12.17 at the start, and anyone looking at Megaport then had to choose between two very different but reasonable stories.
On the optimistic side, the bull Narrative set Fair Value at A$15.17, described as 25% above the start price. It leaned on an assumption of 18.2% annual revenue growth and profit margins rising to 6.7%, supported by new data centres, extra services and automation.
The bear Narrative pointed to a Fair Value of A$9, which is 26% below the start price. It focused on risks from stricter data laws that could limit global connectivity and from hyperscalers internalising more networking, which might pressure Megaport’s pricing power and recurring revenue.
Megaport’s later move into large AI infrastructure contracts, GPU Pool spending and the A$827.3m capital raise lined up with the bull case that expected cloud and AI demand to widen its opportunity. The reported H2 2026 numbers told a harder story. Revenue reached A$177.3m, yet the firm reported a larger loss and net margin fell to -11.2%. Overall, the evidence cut both ways.
The key assumption here was not just growth, but profitable growth. When you weigh another stock with a similar AI story, check whether higher sales arrive alongside a less negative net margin or a clear path toward positive earnings.
Megaport now trades at A$21.01 from the start of the year. The selected Narrative places its Fair Value below that level, reflecting a view that the current quote already prices in ambitious assumptions about scale, profitability and P/E.
A buyer at today’s price is effectively backing strong recurring revenue and high margins to hold. How does the selected Narrative’s regulatory and customer concentration risk challenge that assumption?
"Growing geopolitical tensions and tightening regulatory frameworks, such as more stringent data sovereignty and cross-border data transfer laws, may significantly limit Megaport's ability to offer global connectivity, curbing revenue growth as multinational customers seek more localized, siloed solutions. The continued consolidation among hyperscale cloud providers and large telecoms threatens to reduce the addressable market for independent platforms like Megaport, leading to a potential loss of pricing power and compression of long-term margins as larger players increasingly internalize network connectivity in-house."
