01:39 AM EDT, 10/06/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The Hong Kong Monetary Authority questioned HSBC's (HSBA.L) decision to establish a global artificial intelligence center in Singapore rather than Hong Kong, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, citing two people familiar with the matter. Hong Kong's de facto central bank reportedly recently asked HSBC why it chose to establish the Centre of Excellence in Singapore, where the British lender plans to hire over 100 AI specialists. The authority also reportedly spoke with HSBC and Standard Chartered (STAN.L) about moving more executives and senior roles to Hong Kong, the report added. In an emailed response to MT Newswires, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said it regularly engages with authorized institutions on a wide range of matters. HSBC and StanChart did not immediately respond to requests for comment from MT Newswires. (Market Chatter news is derived from conversations with market professionals globally.
