Key Points

  • Ethena is up 204% over the past 90 days.

  • Ethena enables new yield-earning opportunities in decentralized finance (DeFi).

  • According to Standard Chartered, Ethena could deliver 8 times returns over the next 24 months.

Over the past 90 days, Ethena (CRYPTO: ENA) has been on fire. It's now up a head-spinning 204%, making it one of the top-performing cryptocurrencies in the world. It's even outpacing market darlings such as Venice (CRYPTO: VVV), Zcash (CRYPTO: ZEC), and Hyperliquid (CRYPTO: HYPE), all of which have been standout performers in 2026.

So what in the world is Ethena, and why has it taken the crypto market by storm in the past three months?

Reasons for Ethena's upward climb

The answer to that question is relatively straightforward: Ethena is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol built on Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH) that makes new yield-earning opportunities possible for crypto investors. With the SEC and CFTC now working to create a pro-crypto regulatory environment, DeFi coins such as Ethena have the potential to take off.

The Ethena DeFi protocol makes possible the creation of a "synthetic" U.S. dollar called USDe (CRYPTO: USDE). The price of USDe is always $1, making it similar to a traditional stablecoin, which also trades for $1.

However, USDe is created using financial derivatives and some very sophisticated hedging techniques. Using this synthetic dollar, it's possible to generate much higher yields than with traditional dollars (like the kind you have in your wallet right now) or traditional stablecoins such as USDC (CRYPTO: USDC).

You get the idea here -- this is financial alchemy at its very best (or its very worst, depending on your view of risk). Unlike traditional stablecoins that store physical cash or short-term U.S. Treasuries at a bank, Ethena maintains a dollar value using a risk-neutral financial position. That's brilliant, but also very risky.

In 2024, USDe skyrocketed in popularity thanks to its ability to offer triple-digit yields. That's off the charts, and much more than you'd make by putting that money to work in a traditional deposit account. For good reason, the size of USDe has ballooned to nearly $5 billion, ranking it among the top 25 cryptocurrencies by market cap.

Understandably, there is reason to be skeptical here. Financial alchemy can go very wrong. Synthetic dollar pegs can be under pressure during extreme crypto market movements. If USDe ever loses its dollar peg, the whole house of cards could come crashing down.

So don't invest in Ethena if you're risk-averse. To understand how things can go wrong very quickly with stablecoins, just think back to the collapse of the Terra Luna ecosystem back in 2022.

How high could Ethena go in 2027?

That being said, the upside for Ethena could be tremendous. Standard Chartered (OTC: SCBFY) is currently predicting that Ethena will outperform both Bitcoin and Ethereum in 2027. Standard Chartered thinks ENA might trade as high as $1.10 by the end of 2027 and $2 by the end of 2028.

So, if you're looking to turbo-charge your portfolio's performance, sprinkling a little Ethena in could help. If Ethena soars from its current price of $0.25 to a future price of $2, it could make you rich.
