According to brokerage China, South Korea's financial system recently experienced an unprecedented “hacking storm.” From the end of September to the beginning of October, from South Korea's top 20 commercial banks, Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Korea Asia Bank, Woori Bank, and NH Nonghyup Bank, to BNK Busan Bank, fell one after another within almost the same time window. The attack affected many of South Korea's leading financial institutions. The scale of the leak and affected systems varied from institution to institution. This is the first time in the history of the Korean financial industry that so many important banks have been attacked at the same time, drawing great attention from South Korea's financial supervisory authorities and ordinary depositors. A number of banks and Korean media have mentioned a new attack model “driven by AI” or involving artificial intelligence technology. South Korea's financial authorities have acted swiftly to demand that the financial system comprehensively inspect internal systems and dispatch personnel to some banks to strictly prevent additional losses.
