Eaton Investors Are Up 34%. What Was The Case They Backed?

Simply Wall St · 2d ago

If Eaton was on your watchlist instead of in your portfolio, the recent move probably feels expensive now. Investors who held Eaton from the start of the year are up 34.4%, including dividends. The obvious question is what might have tipped you off back on 1 January that data center power demand and capacity expansion, rather than the legacy vehicle exposure, could be the business swing factor worth focusing on.

This theme extends beyond Eaton. See which of 40 power grid technology and infrastructure stocks may still merit a closer look.

The Two Eaton Narratives Investors Had To Weigh

Eaton shares cost US$319 at the start of the period, and investors were deciding whether data center demand would justify paying up for a premium power management business.

The bullish story pointed to a Fair Value of US$394, a price implied by expectations, built on 9.0% annual revenue growth and profit margins reaching 17.4% as data centers and electrification projects scaled up.

The cautious view saw Fair Value closer to US$288, assuming Eaton’s reliance on data centers and heavy capacity expansion could pressure margins if demand slowed or mega projects slipped.

What The Eaton Evidence Actually Showed

Eaton committed over US$30m to new switchgear facilities and agreed to acquire COL Group, both aimed at medium voltage gear for data centers and utilities, which backed the bullish focus on electrical infrastructure. Reported numbers told a tougher story. Revenue reached US$8.5b in Q2 2026 versus US$7.0b in Q2 2025, while net income slipped to US$821m and net margin fell to 9.6%. Profitability progress therefore remained unproven.

The lesson is that when a thesis leans on richer margins from higher value projects, you need to track the net margin line as closely as the backlog headlines and expansion announcements. For any other electrification or data center supplier, check whether rising capital spend and acquisitions are actually lifting margin percentages in the financial statements.

What Eaton's Run Already Prices In

Eaton now trades at US$436, up sharply from US$319 from the start of the year. The selected Narrative’s Fair Value sits below the current price, which reflects one view that the stock already embeds ambitious outcomes for data center power spending and recent acquisitions.

That raises a practical question for any buyer. For today’s valuation to hold, you would need confidence that Eaton converts its AI heavy project pipeline into sustained, higher margin earnings without major delays, underused capacity, or integration setbacks.

"Key Takeaways: Bearish analysts expect Eaton's heavy reliance on AI and cloud data center demand, along with large capacity build outs and acquisitions, to expose the business to sharper downside if electrification spending or data center project pipelines slow from recent levels. The main thing that has to go right is that Eaton converts its record order books and large data center project pipeline into profitable revenue while maintaining the higher margin profile it has built through portfolio reshaping and recent deals such as Boyd and COL Group."

Where Eaton’s Theme Overlaps

Eaton puts power and switchgear in focus, but that is only part of the story. You can also look at what keeps those AI racks usable.

High density computing turns into a problem if the heat is not removed efficiently. At some point, air cooling stops being enough for the load.

Another specialist builds liquid systems and thermal hardware that carry that heat away. Those units help data centers keep GPUs running without constant shutdowns or throttling.

Service work around those cooling loops, from monitoring to maintenance, adds another layer. If AI demand keeps stressing power and heat, that supporting role could matter more over time.
