08:23 AM EDT, 10/01/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Germany and France are facing pressure from the US government to release their emergency diesel reserves as Washington looks at potentially imposing a ban on its diesel exports, Reuters reported Thursday, citing three people close to the discussions. The US asked the European Union to release 120 million barrels of diesel over the next six months to boost supplies and lower US fuel costs ahead of its local midterm elections in November. Germany and France both hold a large share of the EU's oil reserves, based on Eurostat data cited by Reuters. The European Commission, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland and the UK discussed the potential release of diesel inventories on a Thursday call, the report noted, citing an EU official. The White House and the economy ministries of Germany and France did not immediately respond to MT Newswires' requests for comment.
