Hong Kong Monetary Authority: Total deposits of authorized institutions in Hong Kong rose 1.4% in August

The Zhitong Finance App learned that on September 30, statistics published by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority showed that total deposits of authorized institutions in Hong Kong increased by 1.4% in August 2026, with HKD and foreign currency deposits rising by 2.2% and 0.8% respectively. From the beginning of the year to the end of August, total deposits and HKD deposits increased by 7.3% and 8.6% respectively. RMB deposits in Hong Kong fell 2.1% in August to RMB 1,101.5 billion at the end of August. The total amount of RMB remittances for cross-border trade settlements was 1,5376 billion yuan in August, compared to 1,383.7 billion yuan in July.

Total loans and advances rose 0.3% in August, up 7.0% from the beginning of the year to the end of August. Among them, loans used in Hong Kong (including trade finance) increased by 0.4% in August, while loans used outside Hong Kong remained largely unchanged. As HKD deposits increased more than HKD loans, the HKD loan-to-deposit ratio fell from 70.7% at the end of July to 69.3% at the end of August.

Both M2 and M3 of the Hong Kong dollar money supply increased by 2.1% in August, up 9.9% compared with the same period last year. The seasonally adjusted Hong Kong dollar money supply M1 rose by 3.5% in August, up 4.7% compared with the same period last year, partly reflecting investment-related activities. Total money supply M2 and M3 both increased by 1.4% in August. Compared with the same period last year, M2 and M3 both increased 11.0%.
