The 29th is the 7th International Food Loss and Waste Awareness Day. A related event jointly organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the United Nations Environment Programme was held at the FAO headquarters in Rome on the same day. FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said that reducing food loss and waste will help promote the transformation of agrofood systems, save natural resources and capital, and reduce pressure on forest protection. According to FAO data, about 13.4% of the food produced globally is lost after harvesting and before entering retail, while another 19% is wasted in retail, food service and household consumption. According to estimates, around 1.4 billion hectares of land worldwide are used to produce food that is ultimately not consumed. As agricultural expansion remains one of the main drivers of global deforestation, reducing food loss and waste can help improve the efficiency of the use of existing agricultural land and ease the pressure on forests.
