Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the announcement of the closure of part of the Ontario branch of the Cleveland Cliffs Company “betrayed” workers and promised to hold the company accountable “to the extent permitted by law.” The branch called Stelco said on Monday that it expects to indefinitely close the cold rolling and coating business at its Hamilton plant near Toronto, citing US tariffs as part of the reason. The shutdown will affect approximately 350 employees. Carney told reporters in Vancouver on Tuesday that he was “very disappointed” by Stelco's decision and pointed out that the federal government had provided financial support to the company in the past. The Prime Minister emphasized that Stelco “has legal obligations with respect to employment”. Cleveland-Cliffs CEO Lorenco Gonsalves said on Tuesday that he would not shy away from a legal battle with the Carney administration. In an interview, he said, “If they plan to do it — that's great. I'll see you in court.”
