Foreign Ministry Spokesman Guo Jiakun presided over a regular press conference on September 29th. Guo Jiakun said that 54 years ago today, the older generation of Chinese and Japanese leaders signed and issued a joint statement with extraordinary political vision and courage to normalize Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. Japan clearly stated in the joint statement that it deeply reflects its war responsibilities, recognizes that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legitimate government of China, and fully understands and respects the Chinese government's position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China. Four political documents, including the Joint Declaration, lay the political and legal foundation for Sino-Japanese relations, and establish political rules for properly dealing with major issues of principle, such as history and Taiwan. They should not be distorted, should not be regressed, let alone destroyed. Guo Jiakun stressed that today, more than half a century later, Sino-Japanese relations are once again facing a serious situation. The root cause is that the political foundation of bilateral relations has been seriously damaged. Japan's current leaders not only do not reflect on historical crimes of aggression, but instead claim that “something happened in Taiwan constituted a crisis of Japan's survival”, blatantly challenging China's national sovereignty and betraying the original intention of normalizing Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations and Japan's political commitment to China. Japan is also hyping up so-called “external threats,” using this as an excuse to accelerate “re-militarization,” challenge the post-war international order, and threaten regional peace and stability. Guo Jiakun pointed out that history has proven time and again that only by truly adhering to the spirit of the four Sino-Japanese political documents can the relationship between the two countries not sail or derail. As Foreign Minister Wang Yi pointed out yesterday during a meeting with Japan's Council for the Promotion of Trade, Iwaya Tsuyoshi, the urgency for Japan is to correct the erroneous statements and actions of its leaders on the Taiwan issue as soon as possible. The important thing is to adopt a correct attitude on historical issues; the fundamental thing is to form an objective and rational perception of China. “On today's historic day, we once again urge those in power in Japan to actually reflect on correcting errors and return to the original intention and origin of the four political documents with practical actions.” Guo Jiakun said.
