Shareholders in the Canadian LNG joint venture project led by Shell Group made the final investment decision to expand liquefied natural gas exports. At a time when core Asian customers are facing the worst supply shock in recent years, this multi-billion dollar plan is officially underway. Shell announced on Tuesday that the long-awaited investment decision for the second phase of the Kitimat project in British Columbia will nearly double the project's production capacity to 28 million tons per year. The west coast plant already produced the first batch of liquefied natural gas in June 2025. The expanded production portion is expected to be put into commercial operation in the early 2130s.
