The Zhitong Finance App learned that Samsung Electronics and its affiliates will invest a total of 1 billion US dollars in Helix Digital Infrastructure. According to reports, the company is an artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure company founded by the global investment agency KKR (KKR.US) and supported by AI leader Nvidia (NVDA.US).

Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday that it will invest 500 million US dollars; the remaining capital will be jointly funded by Samsung C&T, Samsung SDS, Samsung SDI, Samsung Life Insurance, and Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance.

The investment comes as Helix is trying to cope with increasing competition in the AI infrastructure market by targeting both data center deployments and the underlying power infrastructure required.

The deal also enabled Samsung to mobilize the capabilities of various affiliated companies, covering fields from semiconductors and cooling systems to data center construction and batteries. The group is seeking to expand its role in building global AI infrastructure.

Helix was founded in June this year to focus on the infrastructure needed to support growing AI demands, including hyperscale data centers, power generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure, and optical networks.

The company is headed by Adam Selipsky, the former CEO of Amazon (AMZN.US) AWS. KKR, the Kuwait Investment Authority, Nvidia, and the US power company Vistra (VST.US) were the founding investors of Helix.

KKR said that in addition to this latest investment, the company has committed more than $10 billion to Helix.

Samsung said the investment will help accelerate the global deployment of AI data centers with Helix and deepen cooperation among participating companies.

KKR has invested more than $75 billion in global digital infrastructure and electricity, and has invested around $9 billion in Korea since 2009.
