Anthropic is in preliminary negotiations to lease up to 1 gigawatt of computing power capacity from Apollo Global Management Holdings data center developers. This is a major step for the AI company to reduce its dependence on cloud service providers. According to people familiar with the negotiations, Anthropic, the developer of the Claude model, is exploring becoming a direct tenant of the Stream Data Centers development project. The company has a history of 27 years of development and has deployed data centers in many parts of the US; Anthropic plans to deploy tensor processing units designed by Broadcom and Google in the computer room. Another person familiar with the matter said that this batch of computer rooms can also be equipped with other AI chips such as Nvidia GPUs. Nvidia is increasing its investment in the layout of data center-related companies, striving to make its own GPU rather than TPU the main chip for large-scale cutting-edge AI computing power facilities. Data center developers say that no matter what kind of chip solution is selected in the end, the capital investment corresponding to 1 gigawatt of computing power will require at least 40 billion US dollars. Currently, most of Anthropic's computing power is obtained by renting chip servers from cloud service providers such as Amazon Cloud Technology, Google, and SpaceX. Anthropic has previously signed small computer room lease agreements with Hut 8 and TeraWolf, which are being transformed from Bitcoin mining companies. By directly controlling server hardware and bypassing cloud service providers seeking profit, this opens up a path for reducing computing power costs. If implemented, this partnership with Stream will be Anthropic's largest leasing deal to date. Meanwhile, its main competitor, OpenAI, is also pursuing a similar strategy.
