Southern's “Business Daily” quoted pre-qualification documents issued by the state-owned logistics company South Africa Transport Group as saying that South Africa plans to build new port terminals and repair railway lines for manganese ore exports, with a total project investment of up to 44 billion rands. The report said that the South African Transport Group will grant a 25-year franchise to a private company to build and operate the terminal at Nkoura Port. Reports show that railway line repair and maintenance costs are about 20 billion rand. South Africa has proven that manganese reserves account for about 70% of the world's total, mostly concentrated in the Kalahari Basin in the Northern Cape. This is also the largest known onshore manganese deposit in the world.
