Bitfire Group Holdings Limited's (HKG:1611) stock rose 11% last week, but insiders who sold HK$93m worth of stock over the last year are probably in a more advantageous position. Selling at an average price of HK$3.58, which is higher than the current price, may have been the best move for these insiders because their investment would have been worth less now than when they sold.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the insider, Zhong Gengfa, for HK$93m worth of shares, at about HK$3.58 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The good news is that this large sale was at well above current price of HK$2.07. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels. Zhong Gengfa was the only individual insider to sell over the last year.

For those who like to find hidden gems this free list of small cap companies with recent insider purchasing, could be just the ticket.
I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Bitfire Group Holdings insiders own about HK$863m worth of shares (which is 55% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
The fact that there have been no Bitfire Group Holdings insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. It's great to see high levels of insider ownership, but looking back over the last year, we don't gain confidence from the Bitfire Group Holdings insiders selling. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
