Eighth annual research report explores recruiting trends including job search fraud, AI adoption, ghosting, job board usage, and skills-based hiring
FREDERICK, Md., Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- iHire has released its 2026 State of Online Recruiting Report, highlighting a growing trust gap in hiring as employers struggle with fraudulent applicants, and job seekers encounter fake, scam, and "ghost" jobs. The eighth annual research report, based on a survey of 1,054 job seekers and 318 employers from 57 industries across the United States, also explores AI adoption, job board usage, candidate expectations, employer branding, skills-based hiring, and other trends shaping talent acquisition. The full report is available at https://www.iHire.com/SOOR26.

Key survey findings detailed in iHire's 2026 State of Online Recruiting Report include the following:
Trust and authenticity are growing concerns on both sides of the hiring equation.
Job boards remain cornerstones of recruiting and job searching.
AI adoption in recruiting has leveled off, while job seekers remain wary of its role in hiring.
Ghosting and candidate quality continue to hinder meaningful connections.
Additional notable themes and statistics include:
"Our research shows that trust, transparency, and human connection matter more than ever in recruiting," said Steve Flook, iHire's President and CEO. "Employers are receiving unqualified and sometimes fraudulent applicants, and job seekers are questioning whether opportunities are legitimate and if they'll hear back after applying. Moving forward, companies that blend the human touch with technology, promote a strong employer brand, and provide a positive candidate experience will be best positioned to find the right talent."

Research Methodology
iHire surveyed 1,054 job seekers and 318 employers from 57 industries across the United States in July and August 2026 via the Qualtrics XM platform. Respondents came from iHire's job seeker and employer databases. All decimal points are rounded to the nearest tenth. For many questions, multiple answers could be selected, so percentages add up to a sum greater than 100%. In some instances, survey questions were skipped by an individual respondent.
