On September 20, Germany held two local elections, namely the capital Berlin and the eastern Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state assembly elections. The CDU, led by German Chancellor Mertz, suffered a fiasco in the pre-May elections. According to preliminary official results in the early hours of this morning local time, the CDU received only 4.9% of the vote, and did not even reach the “threshold” of 5% of the vote to enter the state legislature. This is also the worst record the CDU has achieved in any state election since 1949.
