The sharp rise in demand for electricity brought about by artificial intelligence has spawned billions of dollars in clean energy investments, including next-generation geothermal power generation and advanced nuclear reactors. Today, major cloud giants are adding another clean technology: long-term energy storage batteries. In Arizona, Google's parent company Alphabet is collaborating with Italian company Energy Dome to use carbon dioxide energy storage batteries to store electricity for 10 hours. Crusoe Energy is partnering with startup Form Energy to deploy iron-air batteries. The battery uses iron, water, and oxygen in the air to chemically react to store and release electric energy, and can last up to several days. Meanwhile, Meta reached an agreement with Noon Energy, another Californian energy storage manufacturer, to deploy an energy storage system: by decomposing carbon dioxide into carbon and oxygen, then generating electricity in reverse reaction, to achieve 100 hours of renewable energy storage. Amanda Yang, head of clean energy at Meta, said, “Ultra-long energy storage can really help achieve a clean and stable electricity supply. The four-hour energy storage can do very limited things.”
