While it’s been a great week for Star Energy Group Plc (LON:STAR) shareholders after stock gained 10%, not so much for insiders who sold stock over the past year. The return on their investment would have been much higher had they held on to their stock.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the CEO & Director, Ross David Glover, sold UK£46k worth of shares at a price of UK£0.16 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of UK£0.23, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 26% of Ross David Glover's holding.
