The HKSAR Government today gazetted the Secretary for Transport and Logistics's approval of the railway plan for the Hong Kong section of the North Ring Road branch line, as required by the Railways Ordinance. The North Ring Road project is an important transportation infrastructure to promote the development of the northern metropolitan area and help Hong Kong better integrate into national development. It is proposed to accelerate the construction of the northern metropolitan area and promote the collaborative development of rail transit in line with the national “15th Five-Year Plan” plan outline. The North Ring Road branch line includes an underground railway with a length of about 6 kilometers starting from Xintian Station on the main line. Among them, the Hong Kong section is about 5 kilometers long, while the Shenzhen section is about 1 kilometer long. The North Ring Road branch line will have three new railway stations, including two new railway stations on the Hong Kong section in the Chautou and Hetao areas of Xintian Science and Technology City, and a new railway station on the Shenzhen section at Xinhuanggang Port. As a cross-border branch of the North Ring Road project, in addition to serving Xintian Science and Technology City and the Hetao region, the North Ring Road branch line also connects to the new Huanggang Port, connects the subway networks of Hong Kong and Shenzhen, facilitates the movement of people between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and also has the functions of local commuting and cross-border railway services in Hong Kong, which helps promote the “hard connectivity” of infrastructure in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. The railway plan for the Hong Kong section of the North Ring Road branch line did not receive any objections during publication, which shows that the project has always received widespread support from the community. As the railway plan is authorized, construction work on the Hong Kong section of the North Ring Road branch line will begin as soon as possible. The goal is for the North Link branch line to be opened simultaneously with the main line in 2034 or before 2034. At that time, the journey between Xintian and Xinhuanggang Port is expected to take only about 11 minutes.
